The decoration of each pot was elaborately considered. Washington would tape tracing paper to the pot, draw onto it and remove it to refine the drawing on the reverse before tracing the improved design back onto the pot. The tracing paper gets placed on the pot many times, to transfer the image before the oxide gets brushed on before glazing.
